The Sousaphone, named after John Phillip Sousa, an Americana icon and composer is a large brass instrument, worn for purposes of mobility. The musician is encircled by the instrument as the bell faces forward (Typically a 22" bell, or around 56cm) though "rain-catcher" models, where the bell faced upward did exist for a time. Made popular by marching bands and jazz, the sousaphone was allegedly first created by J.W. Pepper in 1893, commissioned by composer John Phillip Sousa himself. C. G. Conn
