Pickup trucks are the most inefficient, gas-guzzling vehicles on the road. But counterintuitively, trucks are relatively low-hanging fruit for engineers to reimagine as electric vehicles. Trucks are large enough to accommodate large battery packs, and those packs actually improve their weight distribution and handling. And the instant torque can be incredibly useful for straight-line acceleration and off-roading.
We’ve driven early electric truck efforts such as the Ford F-150 Lightning, Rivian R1T and GMC Hummer EV SUT, but there are far more to come soon. Here’s a roundup of the future new electric trucks we can’t wait to drive in 2024 and beyond.
Chevrolet Silverado EV (2024)
Chevrolet Silverado EV
Pros
- Ample range and performance
Cons
- Initial RST trim costs more than $100,000
Chevy unveiled the Silverado EV back in 2022, and the consumer production model finally hits dealers in summer 2024. Built on GM’s Ultium EV platform, it should offer up to 400 miles of range and accelerate from 0-60 mph in 4.5 seconds in “Wide Open Watts” mode. It also borrows some style from the Chevy Avalanche, if you’re into that sort of thing.

GMC Sierra EV Denali (2024)
GMC Sierra EV Denali
Pros
- Much of Hummer EV capability without the gaudy appearance
Cons
- Nearly 30% less towing capacity than the diesel Sierra
Yes, the Silverado EV has a GMC sibling, the Sierra EV Denali. It will pack 754 horsepower and 785 lb-ft of torque, 400 miles of range and be able to expand the bed beyond 10 feet with the Multipro midgate. Edition 1 vehicles will launch in summer 2024 with full availability later in the year.

Ram 1500 REV (2024)
Ram 1500 REV
Pros
- Up to 500 miles of range
Cons
- Massive, heavy battery packs
Ram may be the last among the Big Three to bring an EV pickup to market. But don’t expect their offering to be least. The Ram 1500 REV should offer more than 650 horsepower, and the short range model will offer more range than the long-range F-150 Lightning. And it should look and feel a lot like the Ram 1500 we already know and love.

Toyota Electric Tacoma (2025)
Toyota Electric Pickup
Pros
- Toyota quality, durability and reliability without the carbon footprint
Cons
- Could get seriously expensive given gas Toyota truck pricing
Toyota confirmed it is developing an electric pickup for the American market. The brand unveiled a concept called the “Pickup EV,” which looked a heck of a lot like an EV version of the 2024 Tacoma. And according to Japanese reports, Toyota is developing an EV powertrain for the Tacoma.

Ford Project T3 Pickup (2025)
Ford Project T3 Electric Pickup
Pros
- More capability from a dedicated EV platform
Cons
- May not look quite as much like a standard F-150
Ford converted an F-150 into an EV with the F-150 Lightning. But the brand has already confirmed an electric F-Series truck built on a dedicated EV platform will arrive in 2025. Ford hasn’t provided much in the way of specs yet; expect it to outperform the Lightning. But CEO Jim Farley did liken it to the “Millenium Falcon — with a back porch attached.”

Toyota EPU Compact Pickup (2026)
Toyota EPU Pickup
Pros
- Looks close to production ready
Cons
- Not a body-on-frame off-roader
Toyota unveiled an EPU Pickup concept at the Japan Mobility Show in 2023. It’s a double cab pickup built on a unibody EV platform. It looks like an electric Ford Maverick-killer. Toyota has not confirmed it’s coming to production and coming to America yet. But the concept being shown in left-hand-drive with the speedometer in mph is an encouraging sign.

Rivian R2T (2026)
Rivian R2T Pickup
Pros
- Should be dramatically cheaper than R1T
Cons
- Should be smaller and less capable than R1T
Rivian is about to debut its new R2 vehicle platform. The new vehicles will be smaller and less capable than the R1 models, but they should also come with a more attainable price tag in the $40,000 to $60,000 range. An R2 SUV will likely launch first with an EV following shortly after.
Scout Motors Pickup (2026)
Scout Pickup
Pros
- Built by Magna Steyr, who build the G-Wagen
Cons
- Always difficult to launch a new brand
Volkswagen is reviving the iconic Scout nameplate as an American off-road truck and SUV brand. Scout should launch its too-be-named truck and SUV into production in 2026. VW of America’s COO first floated the idea for the new brand as Rivian, but at “an affordable price point.” Sounds like a plan to us.
Kia Electric Pickup (2026)
Kia Electric Pickup
Pros
- Will be based on one of the most advanced EV platforms
Cons
- Truck market is tough for foreign brands to crack
Kia building a pickup? The brand has confirmed that is in the works and will be built in America (allowing the company to avoid the chicken tax on imports). It will be built on a dedicated EV platform. Details are scant beyond that, but we expect it may borrow both the design language and the powertrain lineup from the EV9 crossover. No timeline has been announced yet, but expect the truck to be on the road as one of the 14 EVs Kia plans to launch by 2027.
Ford Ranger EV (2029)
Ford Ranger Electric
Pros
- Should be smaller and cheaper than full-size F Series
Cons
- May not arrive until end of the decade
Ford just unveiled the new 2024 Ford Ranger with an all gas lineup. A plug-in hybrid may be en route in the near-ish future. But we don’t expect Ford to fast-track a Ranger EV, especially with F-150 Lightning demand faltering. A forecast from AutoForecastSolutions projected a Ranger entering production on a new TE1 platform in August 2029, likely for the 2030 model year.

Nissan Electric Pickup (2030)
Nissan Electric Pickup
Pros
- Could be smaller, cheaper than most EV trucks
Cons
- Reports say it may take a long time to arrive
Nissan is pulling out of the full-size truck market in America. But the brand may explore a new segment where it can be competitive: smaller electric pickups. Nissan did reveal an intriguing Surf-out concept that previewed an electric pickup. But reported plans to keep the gas Frontier in production through 2029 may mean we don’t see an electric truck from Nissan until 2030.
