Sunstone and Saplings - Chapter 1 - Puzzleheadedclerk (2024)

Chapter Text

Chloe had spent a lot of time with Logan since his goat had tossed her off a cliff. Not that she was complaining mind you; but forced proximity, a town invasion, and two separate near death experiences in the span of an hour and a half would force you to learn a lot about a person real quickly. What she'd learned about Logan was that he was a crack shot, had a smile that could rival the sun for it's warmth, and if the two of them were left alone for more than five minutes he could and would kiss her so thoroughly she forgot her own name. A fact that pleased him to no end, and embarrassed her greatly.

She couldn't meet Trudy's eyes for a week after the two of them had arrived too early for a meeting at the town hall, and Logan had taken the opportunity to pin her to the Mayor's desk and demonstrate, with examples, why the free city commission could wait a few hours. Chloe's hands had been halfway through divesting him of his shirt when the door opened. Fortunately everyone seemed to be good sports about it, not that she would ever bring it up again. But the knowing smirks and laughs had followed her around town for weeks afterwards. She was only thankful that the gossip mill had moved on to Pablo and his dalliance with the new commissioner and she could finally go into Tailor Made without Vivi making comments about great grandchildren.

What took her slightly longer to learn was both Andy and Logan's penchant for comfy, soft things, and their ability to fall asleep in the most unlikely of places at the drop of a hat. Maybe it was the relief of home after being on the run for two years, or the welcome itself, filled with hugs and tearful apologies and on exorbitant amount of spiked yakmel milk. After some initial fits and starts, a few miscommunications, a completely avoidable and really dumb injury on her part, and two hours spent with his tongue down her throat as he patiently explained why he would make an excellent boyfriend; Chloe and Logan had finally settled into somewhat of a routine. More often than not, she'd come back from a salvaging run or a ruin dive to find one or both of her boys in the house, Andy usually in the game room she'd set up with a smaller punch-o-tron, or in what was a guest bedroom and had now just turned into his room, complete with a mini spacesuit and a kids sized desk for homework, and Logan either in the library reading a book or in her office working at her desk on the monster manual his father started.

Occasionally, however she would find the two of them exactly like this, outside on the patio overlooking the back garden and sandfish pond, curled in a rattan chair, fast asleep. Logan had his arm around the boy tucked into his side, Nemo curled in an adorable fluff ball at his other hip. Macchiato lay loafing in Logans lap, his eyes closed in bliss. Logan's hand lay halfway down his back, nestled in his fur, as if he had fallen asleep mid-stroke. Chloe was jealous of the damn cat. Even worse there was no space for her to climb in and join the cozy picture, the chair already filled to capacity.

Pouting, Chloe crept silently forward, intending to steal a kiss from the bandit before going back to work. Some sense of self preservation and wariness must have remained from his time on the run, as both Macchiato and Logan opened bleary eyes and blinked at her in the sunlight. Macchiato hopped down off Logan's lap, tail swishing past in admonishment, before he wove his feline body through her legs. Yes, Chloe thought darkly, remember who brings you the good catnip. She couldn't really blame him though, if she were a cat she'd want to be around Logan all the time. Hell she wanted his hands on her constantly as it was. A movement from the chair redirected her attention, as Nemo also hopped down from his perch and an outstretched hand beckoned her to take a seat. It was a tight squeeze, and Chloe ended up more than halfway on Logan's thigh as she tucked herself into him, head coming to rest on his shoulder and his arm making soothing circles on her back through her shirt. Andy shifted slightly in his sleep, drool drippling from the corner of his mouth as he muttered about dancing fractions chasing him down. Lips against her temple distracted her, and she tilted her head up to meet the gorgeous blue eyes of the bandit who had stolen her heart.

"Well hey there darlin'. All finished for the day?" Chloe wasn't sure how it was possible but somehow his voice still sent shivers racing down her spine. "Yeah," she responded, voice pitched as low as his was to keep from waking the sleeping child on his other side. "Although, I may have an idea to work on. I think we could use more room here."

"Can't say I would mind a little more space to sprawl out," stretching out his legs in front of him, Logan tugged on one of the braids in Chloe's hair before pressing a kiss to her lips. She hummed happily in the back of her throat, and swallowed Logans dark chuckle as her tongue teased his. They broke apart as Andy stirred awake, a smirk playing on both their faces as the blonde haired child made gagging noises.

"Yeeeeesh cant you two get a room." A laugh burst out of Chloe at the utter shock on Logans face.

"Where the hell did he learn that from?" As Andy scampered back into the house to avoid further defiling of his eyes, Logans arm snaked out to pull Chloe snug against him. He had a habit of snuggling next to her whenever possible, to Andy's great horror and Chloe's great enjoyment. More often then not, she woke to find herself pulled halfway on top of him, one arm banded around her waist and the other locked around her wrist. He would grumble sleepily whenever she tried to extract herself, and she usually just gave up and cuddled closer to him.

"I dunno. Most likely Jyn or Alo? Possibly Jasmine? Kids say the damndest things." She tugged on his hand, leading him through the patio doors and back into the glowing warmth of their home. "Think you could start dinner? I've got an idea on something, and I think I might have enough materials to start the construction tonight, but I'd need to check some of the boxes."

"Sure love," he was two steps below her on the stairs, the height difference making their eyes and mouths level, "dessert first though." With a laugh that warmed her blood, Logan leaned forward, coaxing her mouth open with a teasing glide of his tongue. Chloe would deny him nothing, her hands fisting in the fabric of his shirt as the kiss slid for sweet and light to something darker, more intense. His hand left hers to slide up her arm and cup the back of her neck, angling her head as his tongue stroked against hers. A low groan rumbled from his as Logan broke the kiss, dropping his forehead to hers as they both caught their breath. "The things you do to me darlin'. Testing my damn control." The heat in his eyes warned her that if she didn't break the connection, no work would be getting done that night, and although Logan without control was one of her favorite versions, the present she had in mind for him was rattling around in her brain. With a quick kiss to his lips, she snuck passed him, calling over her shoulder "you're going to love it. I promise!" Logan's laugh followed her outside to her assembly station. "Let's see. I'll need some rope, windswept cloth, probably about 4 meters, steel bars... a t shape would be the most stable....", muttering under her breath Chloe began to gather the items needed, setting the tailoring machine to weaving a net pattern and her processor to cut large wooden stick to the right length.

A short while later, Chloe was carrying her completed project to the back garden, arranging the large two person hammock between her raspberry bushes and a clump of rose willow and hearts blossom flowers. Shade from her coffee and chestnut trees would prevent the occupants from getting roasted alive if they fell asleep. She had thought about stringing the hammock between two of the trees, but they still got the occasional sand storm, and the steel bars were hefty enough to keep the hammock firmly rooted to the ground. Testing it out, Chloe flopped into the hammock, wiggling to ensure there was no ominous creaking, and that it wouldn't send Andy flying if he climbed into incorrectly. Satisfied, Chloe climbed the nearby tree, stringing a set of lights between them to provide a cozy setting for night time snuggles. Resettling into the hammock, Chloe watched the leaves blow lazily in the trees for a few moments before the sound of a door opening broke her out of her self satisfied trance. Poking her head out, Chloe grinned as Logan approached with a dinner plates in hand.

"Well now, what's all this?" Logan settled the plates next to the table Chloe had dragged over and Andy plopped his own right next it, running back inside for silverware and drinks.

"This, my favorite outlaw, is a Chloe exclusive, the one-of-a-kind, Logan Lounger."

"Mach II," Andy chimed in from the doorway.

"Mach II," Chloe repeated, nodding at Andy as he climbed next to her in the Hammock plate in his lap and braised beef halfway to his lips as Logan settled in next to him. The hammock shifted slightly and Logan reflexive caught Andy's plate as a piece of beef fell from his fork. "Oh ho nice catch!"

They ate in companionable silence, swinging softly as Logan's boots gave them a nudge every now again that had Andy's heels kicking up in glee. Eventually, the plates and cups were stacked on the little table next to the hammock. They all had shifted to lie back, Logan in the middle, Andy on his right and Chloe on the left. Chloe rested with her ear to Logans chest, listening to his heartbeat thrum in time with her own as an overwhelming sense of peace descended on her. She could feel his fingers as they played with her hair in the dying light, and Andy's soft snores as he fell asleep. A small bark and meow, and both Macchiato and Nemo jumped up into the hammock, Nemo taking his usually spot on top of Andy's leg, and Macchiato resuming his favorite position on Logans stomach. Chloe eyes the cat dubiously, fully prepared to stake her claim if it came down to it. A small his sounded by her ear, and the little gecko she found hanging out in her mailbox when she first arrived in Sandrock curled up on her shoulder.

"Whole damn family's here," Logan muttered under his breath, but Chloe knew the annoyance was just for show, his smile as he looked down at her brighter than the sun and moon and all the stars combined.

"Mhm, it's perfect," snuggling closer, Chloe brushed a hand through Andy's hair, smiling as the boy shifted into the touch. As her hand moved back towards its resting place, Logan snagged it, pressing a kiss to her knuckles before letting it fall.

"It sure is."
